Zappa - Hateful Practices
"---
I find the music of the classical period boring because it reminds me of 'painting by numbers.' There are certain things composers of that period were not allowed to do because they were considered to be outside the boundries of the industrial regulatons which determined weather the piece was a symphony, a sonata or a whatever.
All of the norms, as practiced druing the olden days, came into being because the guys who paid the bills wanted the 'tunes' they were buying to 'sound a certain way.'
…
People who think that cassical music is somehow more elevated than 'radio music' sould take a look at the forms involved–and who's paying the bills.

Media Bias
For sure, CBS goofed -- but this is the same shit FOX news has been doing the last four years, and they have not a leg to stand on. Nor does NBC or CNN.
liberal Bias my pasty white ass. If it's not well in the conservative camp, they scream "Wolf!"
What's wrong with bias anyway, as long as there is a conservative network (FOX) to balance the liberal (PBS)? Except now there is so much conservative mainstream, it's hard to wade through.
Just remember to vote "Slightly conservative" over "Reactionary Ultra-Neo-Conservative Bible Humper" this fall.

Zappa – All About Music
"When a guest conductor comes to town, he is not usually giving a performance of something by a living composer. He's doing Brahms; he's doing Beethoven; he's doing Mozart–because he can warm it up in one afternoon and make it sound okay. This makes the accountants happy, and allows the audience to concentrate on his choreography…
Why is that any better then a bunch of guys in a bar band jamming on "Louie Louie" or "Midnight Hour"? [Worn-out classic rock they play every night.]

First from Frank Zappa
I just picked up Frank Zappa's autobiography The Real Frank Zappa Book at a used bookseller. It was published back in '89, quite a while ago and a few years before he passed away.
It has to be one of the more interesting reads. I have always been interested in Zappa's music, (especially since it's so hard to actually get to listen to any of it without buying his CD's) and you can really get a feel for the why and how behind it when you read the book.
It is particularly complete, and it wanders all over, but his stories are entertaining and his views very interesting.

Vacation
Not good to be back. Wish I had more than three weeks. I spent the whole time working anyway.
