Random musings and observations from an individual with too much time on his hands

It's Mushroom picking time.

I just went out myself today and picked a few. No, most are not poisonous, despite what you heard, but a good guide book, or guide, is necessary. Yumm...

Time of the Season

Today sure felt like the beginning of Autumn. The air was brisk and clear. We had showers earlier, and now yellowing, slanting sunlight. It will only be a few more weeks before the leaves begin to change and we hear them rustling by. Now I have to find out when we turn our clocks back.

Websites

Two things today on a political bent:
1) Conservatives Against Bush Finally!
2) The war on Drugs because as Mr. Mackie says, "Drugs are bad."
3) Real Anti-drug ads. Your tax dollars hard at work helping the homeless, paying off the war debt, and providing medical care to the poor.

The UPS Man

I order lots of stuff from the internet. It's easy, it's fun, and I can do it in my underwear. However, the UPS man comes during the middle of the day, when I'm usually not here. Ok, Tuesdays I have off, but four other days of the week, I have work or class.

What I wonder is why they come then. I'm sure it is appropriate for businesses, being open and all, but there are not a lot of people who just sit at home all day. Why don't they have a little box on the slip that asks when you expect to be home? That way they're sure to get you, and you're sure to get your package.

Just a suggestion.

Cars

I'm getting a second car. Well not really getting so much as putting back on the road. It's a '68 Pontiac Tempest.

Old cars are more fun to drive. It seems that everyone drives around in a 97-2003 amorphous blob. Sure, every once in a while you see a huge "Christmas Tree" on the back of someone's car, often suspecting it was half the value of the vehicle, or a bunch of other things stuck on to it and a set of shiny wheels. Even those seem to all look the same so you're not sure what brand the car really is. (Unless it's in gigantic letters on the front or back windscreen.)

An old car is much more unique. You can get cars from dozens of eras with styling you won't find anymore. Sure they lack the 401 automatic gadgets that new cars have... but hey–that's less to go wrong. If you're serious, you can even have disc brakes and such fit onto most older cars.

Something else is that they are usually gigantic. Some people don't like that, but I have to say, in the defense of these larger cars, that they usually get better mileage then that SUV most people want and are probably safer in an accident.

Not that I don't like my new car either. My Outback is fun to drive, and much better at navigating around in the winter. But I loose it in parking lots all the time, and there are buttons all over the place in it. I guess it's just nice to have a choice.

That's it, really, a choice. Sometimes I can be different, and sometimes I can blend in.

Moving Pains

I found out last week why I have never moved before, apart from moving into my last apartment which happened over three years. It is a royal pain in the buttocks.

I'm still tired from moving. There are still boxes that need unpacked.

I'd like to thank my two surrogate brothers for the help in moving. Forget the joke about the dead bodies, real friends help you move and talk to you next week!

Now pardon me while I put down some roots.
